Foldar was one of Morgarath's lieutenants during his exile in the Mountains of Rain and Night, serving as the treacherous Baron's strong-willed second-in-command during both his revolts. He was left on the run after Morgarath's death in The Burning Bridge and becomes a high priority target for the Rangers, eventually becoming the final member of Morgarath's inner circle of followers left free and alive before perishing in a confrontation with Gilan, falling at the Ranger's blade after he used the double knife defence to stab Foldar in the back.

History[]

Morgarath, Foldar's former commander and master.

Foldar was born into an unknown Araluen noble family. However, when he was barely a teenager, he murdered both his parents after an argument over a horse, prompting him to flee and eventually find sanctuary with Morgarath, who, planning an attempt against the throne and recognising a kindred spirit, enlisted the young man into his service. Foldar proceeded to serve under the Baron of Gorlan, going unpunished for his crime (though unconfirmed, given the current status of political upheaval within the country, with Morgarath and his Baron followers effectively controlling Araluen through King Oswald, Morgarath might have used his influence to ensure the murders of Foldar's parents went unknown by the king). After Morgarath's plot was exposed and Castle Gorlan was surrounded by the soldiers of loyal members of the Council of Barons, Foldar accompanied his master into the ragged peaks of the Mountains of Rain and Night, being among the one hundred and fifty troops and Castle Gorlan staff that accompanied the rebel baron into the southern mountains. After Morgarath unleashed his newly-recruited army of semi-human Wargals on Araluen, Foldar, like most of Morgarath's human followers, was presumably given command over a troop of Wargals and lead them across the southern countryside of Araleun, burning much-needed crops, killing animals and laying siege to several villages and castles to confine and contain the barons and their forces and preventing the Araluen nobles from joining the Araluen Army to fight of the invaders before he was recalled to the main body of the army to begin preparations to obliterate the main army. Foldar presumably witnessed the Battle of Ashdown Cut like all of Morgarath's followers before accompanying the army as the force of monsters and humans pursued King Duncan and his army to Hackham Heath and participating in the following battle, fleeing back to Morgarath's mountainous domain with the rebel baron and the rest of the remaining Army of Rain and Night.

Years later, Foldar, though not directly mentioned, fought in the Battle of the Plains of Uthal, commanding Wargals and human followers of his master alike and, alongside the remaining members of Morgarath's band of human commanders, accompanied his master throughout the battle, witnessing Horace's duel with his liege, which resulted in his master's death. Realizing the day was lost, Foldar and several of Morgarath's other followers fled into the Fens to avoid capture. Eventually, as Rangers continued to hunt down Morgarath's supporters, Foldar eventually became the last member of Morgarath's band of loyal human commanders still alive and free, the others having been captured and locked away or killed resisting arrest. King Duncan makes finding Foldar the Rangers' biggest priority. The King explicitly asks Halt to track him down but that proves quite hard as Foldar has a fearsome reputation and several small-time bandits take advantage of this and use it to cause fear and rob travelers easily. Just before entering his year-long banishment that Halt had been sentenced to after insulting the King's dignity out of anger for Duncan's refusal to allow him to set out to rescue his captured apprentice, Will, Halt asks Gilan to track down Foldar in his stead.

Foldar eventually set up base in Highcliff Fief, which was currently without it's Ranger, who was recovering from injuries inflicted during the war, and reached out to make contact with the Fief's Baron, Baron Douglas who had secretly been in league with Foldar and his master during the Rebellion. Threatening to expose Douglas as a secret supporter of Morgarath, Foldar placed the Baron under his control and had him past information regarding the tax payments sent to Castle Araluen and, with a gang of around fifteen to twenty well-trained men (possibly old followers of Morgarath) raided a guarded secret pay wagon from Castle Highcliff carrying payment for the garrisons of outlying castles of the fiefdom, successfully seizing the wealth being carried, killing half of the guards and all of the drivers while driving the rest of the soldiers into the surrounding trees.

Description[]

Foldar dresses in a black cloak and has eyes to match, described as being cold and snake-like. He has a "posh" accent that is difficult for his hired impersonators to mimic, often leading to their cover being blown.

Skills[]

Swordsmanship[]

He is said to be an experienced swordsman, having fought in his fair share of competitions and, apparently, in both Araluen Civil Wars. Though he was defeated by Gilan in The Inkwell and the Dagger, this was not surprising and basically means nothing against Foldar's skills, considering the criminal lieutenant was battling the son of Battlemaster Daniel, who had trained under the legendary swordsmaster MacNeil.
