There are numerous nations in the world of Ranger's Apprentice.

List of Nationalities:[]

Will Treaty 8

Will is an Araluen by birth

  • Araluens - They live in the land Araluen and are the race most of the main protagonists are from. Araluen is the only nation that keeps a standard, trained force of archers and nearly all of the Ranger Corps are ethnically Araluen. Based off the medieval English people.
  • Skandians - They live in Skandia in the north and are often large and strong, faithful friends, and dreaded enemies. They are extraordinary sailors and invented the wolfship, which they use often in coastal raidings. They fight with the Skandian battleaxe and are based on the Skandinavian people (except for the Laps). They are the equivalent of the Vikings in medieval times.
  • Arridi - They are a race of olive-coloured people from Arrida in the south. They are based on the Arabian people and rival the Temujai in battle.
    • Bedullin - They are a people of nomads in the deserts of Arrida who know the sands like the back of their hand and value honour deeply, making them natural enemies of the Tualaghi. The Bedullin are natural gamblers and will bet on anything, but accept their losses without complaint. They are based on the Berbers and Touaregs and North Africa.
    • Tualaghi - Blue-scarved nomadic Arridian desert bandits who plundered cities and tortured their captives. Their only allegiance is to money and greed and they are known as the Riders of the Blue Veil and Forgotten of God. Unlike the Arridi and Bedullin, who believe in a single God, the Tualaghi instead worship devils and djinns, though they still appear to react badly when they are called the Forgotten of God.
    • Socorrans - Though the inhabitants of the city-kingdom of Socorro appear to follow many of the traditions of Arrida, they are apparently independant of Emrikir rule. The Socorrans are made up of a combination of Arridi, Hellenes, Magyarans, Gallican and Iberian slavers, Sonderlanders and Constant Sea corsairs, making it a dual national state, although the typical Socorran attire are long flowing robes and headdresses.
  • Gallicans - They come from Gallica and are based on the French. Some of the Gallican language is actually French, including Arratez, or Halt. Gallicans are also referred to as Galls.
  • Celts - People who originate from Celtica and are based after the medieval Celts. The Celts speak the Araluen tongue and are hard to tell apart from the Araluens, who they have a mutual defense treaty with. The Celts are miners, builders, tunnelers and metalworkers and many spend a large quantity of their lives below ground.
  • Hibernians - They come from Hibernia in the west and are based on the Irish. The Hibernians are somewhat fractured, with their country being separated into seven independent kingdoms who's kings are always at each others' throats. Halt is actually a Hibernian prince and the former Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Clonmel who was chased out of the kingdom by his power-hungry twin, Ferris.
  • Nihon-Jans - They come from Nihon-Ja in the far east and are based on the Japanese and are skilled swordsmen, but don't threaten Araluen because of their isolation. They discovered how to harden steel and many other nations use their method of swordmaking for their own armies.
    • Senshi - Elite warriors who are divided into seperate clans and serve as Nihon-Ja's main military, having been trained since their youth. The Senshi clans, which include the Shimonseki, the Royal Motodato, the Umaki, the Meishi, the Tokoradi and the Kitotashi clans, are obviously based off the samurai of Feudal Japan, being the only class allowed to carry swords.
    • Kikori - Timberworkers which live in the northern mountainous parts of Nihon-Ja. They are loyal to Shigeru, the Emperor.
  • Temujai - They are a nomadic people from the Eastern Steppes and are based on the Mongols or another nomadic people in Central Asia, and are also very fierce warriors that fight with recurve bows from horseback.
  • Scotti - They are a nation made up of multiple fierce tribes, and the nation has had many border wars with Araluen, which was initially part of the Scotti Empire, which some tribes still long to reclaim. A typical Scotti warrior would wear a heavy tartan kilt, much like the scottish people in real life. They are based of the tribes of Picts in the north of Great Britain, hence the name given - Picta.
  • Toscans -  Hailing from Toscano, they are based off of medieval Italians. It is noted multiple times in the books that they once had a huge empire, and the remainder of this empire is the city/state of Byzantos. This empire is clearly based off the real-world Roman Empire.
    • Genovesans - The inhabitants of the independent Toscan city-state of Genovesa, which is based off of the real life city of Genoa. Genovesa is most well-renowned for its skilled mercenary assassins, who are now wide-spread and the city serves as the Genovesan Assassins' headquarters.
  • Wargals - Large creatures that resemble a bear or large dog with dark hair that stands on its rear paws who roam the Mountains of Rain and Night. They have low intelligence, communicating with each other primarily through a form of thought awareness, and can be controlled by those with a higher mental capacity than them, such as Morgarath, who twisted the Wargals normally peaceful and timid nature, turning them into near-mindless weapons.
  • Kalkara - A creature who seems to be a cross between a bear and an ape, whose eyes freeze those who look into them in terror. Their fur is coated with fair amount of oil (excreted from the skin) which mats the fur together to form a powerful natural armor. This gel is highly flammable, so they can be killed with a flaming arrow. The Kalkara are single-minded, and thus can only commit to one mission at a time.  They are obsessed with silver and will do anything for possesion of the precious metal, leading to what appeared to be the last three Kalkara (who were possibly the last remnants of a dying race) entering the service of Morgarath.
  • Helenese - Based off of the Greeks. The Greek culture is called Hellenic. The Hellenes originate from a remote archipelago of islands in the northeast of the Constant Sea. Many Hellenes are fond of bright, gaudy clothing and indulge in piracy.
  • Santorillans - Islanders of Santorillos, a island located in the Constant Sea. They deal with Myrgos and the corsairs of Vulture, who give the islanders protection from roving pirates in return for supplies.
  • Magyarans - These people originate from a country east of Teutlandt and Skandia that is probably based on Hungary, for Hungarians also call themselves Magyarans. Many Magyarans indulge in piracy and are probably some of the most infamous sea raiders/pirates, aside from, formerly, the Skandians in sea raiding, the Magyarans loathing the Skandians.
  • Iberians - Iberians are a nation of people who have always had changing rulers. Iberion is home to fine craftsmen and artists and is fairly rich. However, many poor Iberians flee their situation and become pirates. These Iberian pirates are as feared in the whole of the Constant Sea as much as the Skandians are in the Stormwhite and Narrow Seas and the Iberians who follow the path of corsairs hate the Skandians, who have performed major actions against the Iberion pirates. The Kingdom of Iberion is probably based on either Portugal and Spain.
  • Sonderlanders - The Sonderlanders are a race of mercenaries that originate from a large island-kingdom west of Skandia, which is potentially based off either Iceland or Greenland. Though they appear to be trade partners or even allies of the Skandians (as Iceland and Greenland were Viking colonies, Sonderland could also be a colony of Skandia), some Skandians hold those of Sonderland in disdain for their mercenary ways, despite their own people also participating in the practise. The Sonderlanders occasionally launch raids on Aralue and Hibernia's coast, though they apparently loath pirate. They are ruled by a triumvirate that rotates the ruling position of Hierarch after a period of two years.
  • Teutlanders - The people of Teutlandt descended from the ancient Teuton tribes, and Teutlandt is probably based on medieval Germany. Like the Gallicans, Teutlandt is in a state of anarchy, being riddled by factions and internecine distrust, making them easy targets for any unified invader.
  • Mawagansett - A peaceful tribe native to a unnamed continent located west of the Endless Ocean. Their peacefulness, however, causes them to be rather vulnerable to raiders, such as the Ghostfaces. The Mawagansett are believed to be Native Americans, but what tribe they are is unknown, although they are possibly based of the Narragansett tribe.
  • Ghostfaces Tribe - The Imsinnis Skassak (known in the common tongue as the Ghost Face tribe) are a savage tribe of raiders that reside on the unnamed eastern continent. The Ghostface reside in the north and launch raids on the more peaceful tribes of the south six or seven years in between. The Ghostfaces may have been based of the Mohawk tribe of North America.
  • Ursali - The inhabitants of the Land of the Ursali are a race that appear to have kept a relatively weak military, their country being one of the first to fall to an invading Temujai force. Ursali are potentially based on Afghanistan, for this is also called after its inhabitants (Land of the Afghani).
  • Hungassi - The Hungassi are a series of tribes originating from a country south-east of Skandia. Hungassi corsairs plague the River Dan using small skiffs powered either by sails or oar power to navigate the calm, tame waters of the River Dan and its many smaller tributaries, preying on and running down river traffic. Due to their major involvement in river piracy, the Hungassi tribesmen have a deep set antipathy towards the Skandians.
  • Zambazi - The Zambazi are people from the black-skinned steaming southern jungles who are fierce fighters, no matter their gender. They are hardy and honourable warriors who are likely based off the African Pygmies.
  • Roamers - Roamers are groups of gypsie-like people who originate from the lands south of the Eastern Steppes, west of Nihon-Ja and east of Ursali. They earn their money by hosting illegal dog-fights, making music and entertainment and stealing, rather than having a fixed homestead, instead travel the western hemisphere in curve-roofed caravans. They are probably based on the Roma and Sinti-people.
  • Alpinan Mountains People - Also known as the People of the Mountains, the Alpinans make a living farming cows and guiding lost outsiders through the mountain range.
