Redmont-map

Map of Castle Redmont and Wensley Village

Wensley Village[]

Wensley Village is home to the townsfolk of the City of Redmont. The Battleschool is situated on the western outskirts of Wensley outside the huge gate that leads beyond the castle walls of Redmont. Jenny's Restaurant is also in Wensley Village.

Castle Redmont[]

Because it is made of ironstone, Castle Redmont is said to glow a reddish colour when the sun is at a particular point in the sky. The word Redmont translates in French to "red mountain." It is built in an odd way, as a triangle instead of the classic square, but just as protective. Inside the Castle walls are a few buildings not including Redmont keep. There are three dormitories for soldiers and other of the sort. There is also a small parade ground that is used for special occasions.

Some one-hundred people are employed there.

Rangers' Cabin[]

Halt's Cabin

Outside the walls of the castle is Wensley Forest, on the outskirts of which is the Rangers cabin, where Halt O'Carrick, the current Ranger of Redmont Fief, lives with his apprentice, Will in books one through four and also in book seven. It's a small but cozy cabin. Inside Halt keeps his pots shimmering and shining - they're always neatly cleaned. Most of the time, Halt O'Carrick, one of the best rangers, has a buquet of field flowers inside. Later on, Will is made a fully qualified ranger and is given the responsibility of looking after Seacliff Fief before being re-posted to Redmont Fief. When the two (Halt and Will) are sent off to different countries, Halt's first apprentice, Gilan, comes into Redmont to look after it until the two return.

  • In The Lost Stories, its remains are found, hundreds of years later.

Inhabitants[]

It is a large fief garrisoned by 40 men at arms, unknown longbowmen, and unknown knights. It is also expected to supply 80 men at arms, unknown longbowmen, and unknown knights in times of war.

The Redmont Fief Ward is a home for orphans, outside the main village. The most recent known inhabitants of the ward were Will Treaty, Horace Altman, Alyss Mainwaring, Jenny Dalby, and George Carter.

Known Inhabitants[]

  • Abelard — The dappled Ranger Horse of Halt O'Carrick and the foal of a Gallican mare who was bred into the Ranger Horses bloodline.
  • Ailsa — One of the cooks of The Heaped Platter in Wensley Village, since her employer, Jenny, trusted Ailsa to run the restaurant in her absence, it can by assumed that Ailsa was a senior cook in The Heaped Platter.
  • Alda (banished from Redmont) — A second-year Battleschool apprentice who along with Bryn and Jerome, was dismissed for bullying Horace Altman and banished from the fief with the command not to return. Of the three tormentors, Alda was noted to be the most skilled of the three, giving Horace some competition for several minutes.
  • Alyss Mainwaring — A former Redmont Ward, a promising young Courier trained under Lady Pauline and the wife of Will Treaty, Alyss assisted vitally in several of the events her husband-to-be partook in, including thwarting a Scotti invasion of Norgate Fief and supporting Emperor Shigeru in the Nihon-Jan Civil War, assisting in securing the aid of the Hassanu people.
  • Ambrose Shining — The silversmith and jeweller of Wensley, Ambrose was noted to be a creature of habit, following a strict schedule every day. He was also noted to be cautious, having stored his precious materials in a hidden lockbox, which proved to be useful--though ultimately futile – when he was attacked by a trio of robbers.
  • Antoinette — The wife of Battlemaster Rodney who brought some feminine qualities to his life before she passed away, leaving Rodney a widow.
  • Audrey — A young woman who worked alongside Giles MacFarlane as the excavated the area around Castle Redmont, stumbling upon the remains of the Ranger Cottage belonging once to Will Treaty
  • Barney — A burly man who serves as part of the Willow Bend Village watch with his friend Joseph.
  • Baron Arald — The well-loved Baron of Redmont, a senior knight and member of the Council of Barons, Arald, despite his position, was a kind and fair ruler of the fief and regarded it as his responsibility to care for the children of his dead subjects who were left with no one to care for in the wake of their parents’ deaths.
  • Barton 'Bearkiller' — The leader of a band of four thieves who plagued the area around Willow Bend Village, Barton gained his title from the deteriorating bearskin he wore as a cape. Eventually, however, Barton and his trio of thugs were captured by Rangers Will Treaty and Madelyn Altman and imprisoned in Willow Bend while awaiting trial at Castle Redmont.
  • Bellerophon (now relocated at the Saddlers' Farm) – Will’s original Ranger steed, originally named Tug. Described as being a shaggy small grey horse, he is extremely loyal, affectionate and intelligent; Will and Tug are very, very good friends. Tragically, however, damage inflicted on his leg by a wolf caused Tug to retire earlier than customary, though Will visits him occasionally and he seems to live on in his successor.
  • Ben Dooley — One of the younger generations of Castle Redmont’s grooms, Ben, like many youngsters, regarded Will with a degree of awe for his near-legendary triumphs and when Will arrived at Redmont after being reassigned there, Ben offered to care for Tug.
  • Blaze (presumably; formerly) — A Ranger Mare and the steed of Commandant Gilan. Presumably lived in Redmont with Gilan while he was trained as a Ranger by Halt before moving to her rider's first assigned fiefdom.
  • Bryn (banished) — One of the three battleschool apprentices who tormented Horace during his first year as an apprentice. Despite cruelly bullying Horace, when he was not backed up by Alda and Jerome, Bryn was little more than a skulking coward. After he was identified as a tormentor by Halt, Bryn was banished from the fief with his two friends.
  • Bumper — Madelyn's black-and-white piebald, Bumper, like all Ranger Horses, is highly intelligent and "talks" to his rider. His code phrase is 'Don't break me' and his name is derived because he used to bump into objects when he was young to see if they would fall over.
  • Camlo — One of Jerome’s Roamer band who passed through Redmont and a significant male relation of Drina who has a liking of redberry wine. Like all of the band, Camlo was driven out of Redmont and the adjoining fiefdoms by Will.
  • Cropper/Cormac (briefly) — The retired Ranger horse of Crowley Meratyn, Cropper, as he was then known, was renamed Cormac after his retirement, yet still enjoys his service and has fun working for the Rangers. He briefly served as a replacement mount of Will after Tug was injured by a wolf.
  • Demon Tooth – The scarred, matted champion fighter of Jerome’s Roamer band’s dogfighters. Because of his training, Demon Tooth’s nature deteriorated to that of a bloodthirsty monster who was killed by an arrow to the flank delivered by Will Treaty, though not before tearing out his abusive master Jerome’s throat, killing him.
  • Desmond — Desmond is Baron Arald's head steward and was placed in charge of preparations for the wedding of Horace Altman and Cassandra at Redmont Fief, despite the “accidents” caused by a disgruntled Robard. A kindly man, Desmond was an old acquaintance of Will Treaty, who knew him from his Ward years.
  • Dilbert — The apprentice to Edward, like his master, Dilbert is fluent in Butcher Speak and was gobsmacked when Jenny revealed she was capable of understanding the backwards language.
  • Donald — A thug of Barton 'Bearkiller' who plagued isolated hamlets and farmers near Willow Bend village until he was captured. He seems relatively unintelligent and appears to have a limited vocabulary, speaking in short words where he refers to himself and his comrades as "us".
  • Drina — A young Roamer woman who was apart of Jerome's Roamer band. Like all of the band, her extended family, Drina treated Hilde cruelly, referring to her as a 'worthless crone' and was clearly aware of the illegal dog fights they led.
  • Ebony — A border shepherd and the daughter of Shadow, Will’s first dog, Ebony was given to Will by Trobar as the pick of the litter. She is excitable and energetic, but is still skilled in the training Will has taught her, though she was apparently either died or grown to old to serve by the time of Madelyn’s training, her role being taken by Sable.
  • Edward — The Butcher of Wensley Village to whom Jenny is a common customer. He is noted to often flatter his customers and communicates with his assistant and trainee, Dilbert at times by speaking backwards so his customers cannot understand him, but was stuck temporary dumb when Jenny revealed she understood everything he was saying when speaking in such a code.
  • George Carter — A wardmate of Will, Alyss, Horace and Jenny, George applied and was accepted into Scribeschool, despite some doubting whether he could succeed with his initial shy nature. However, he would eventually become a scribe, attorney, advocate, linguist, librarian, historian, diplomat, and author who assisted his old friends occasionally.
  • Gert Farrows - A elderly farmer who lives on the foot lands of the Spiny Mountains with her husband Hector. She and her husband were briefly plagued by a cougar and attempted to request the help of Will, but found him gone for a week and were forced either wait or make do with his apprentice Madleyn, despite showing a certain disregard for her skill as a Ranger due to her gender.
  • Giles MacFarlane - The leader of an archaeological dig at the remains of Castle Redmont (the fief of Redmont having been renamed Redman County, and the Kingdom of Araluen, the Republic of Aralan States), he and his assistant Audrey stumble upon the Lost Stories of Araluen.
  • Gordon — One of the closest of Madelyn’s village youth friends, Gordon was something of a rogue, though without any malicious intent behind them. Along with Maddie, Lucy and Martin, Gordon partook in a secret party where they dined on several delicacies, as well as a cask of poor-quality wine before they were found by the angry Will, who informed Gordon’s parents of their son’s actions.
  • Farrel — Halt's predecessor as Ranger of Redmont, as Morgarath began destroying the Corp, Farrel was eventually left among the few originals left, despite Morgarath's attempts to replace him with one of his toadies on two occasions. Farrel joined the Renegade Rangers in their fight against Morgarath, but injured his leg while pursuing the rebel Baron and his men after they fled Castle Gorlan and was succeeded as Redmont's Ranger by Halt, though he continued to serve the Corp in the First Araluen Civil War.
  • Frances — A member of Jenny’s staff who transfers orders from the restaurant kitchens to the visitors’ tables.
  • Halt O'Carrick — The retired Ranger of Redmont and mentor of Will Treaty. Like his apprentice, Halt became a legend in Araluen for his many achievements, the most famous being his crucial role is exposing the rebel Baron Morgarath's plans for a royal coup and leading an surprise ambush on Army of Rain and Night, bringing victory to the Araluen Army and ending the First Araluen Civil War.
  • Hector Farrows - A elderly farmer who lives on the foot lands of the Spiny Mountains with his wife Gert. He and his wife were briefly plagued by a cougar from the mountains and attempted to request the help of Will, but found him gone for a week and were forced either wait or make do with his apprentice Madleyn, despite showing a certain disregard for her skill as a Ranger due to her gender (though Hector was notably more politer than his wife).
  • Hilde – A elderly Gallican woman who, after she was cast out by her village, was taken in by the Roamers, but was treated as nothing more than a slave by the itinerant travellers. Hilde was saved from her life of torment by Will and Alyss when they were tracking the Roamers responsible for stealing Ebony and taken to Jenny’s Restaurant, where she was offered employment.
  • Horace Altman (now posted at Castle Araluen) — A former Redmont Ward, one of the youngest, best, and the most famous knight in the kingdom of Araluen, known in Gallica as the Oakleaf Knight and the Royal Consort to Princess Cassandra. He is a natural swordsman and Will's best friend.
  • Ingrid — One of Lady Sandra's younger maids, after it was resolved that Madelyn would require a maid to maintain her image of a princess being trained in the art of diplomacy by Sandra rather than a Ranger-in-training, Ingrid was appointed to the position and developed a friendship with the Royal Ranger. After the events of the Red Fox Rebellion (which she played a part of), Ingrid was eventually promoted to the position of a senior member of the Royal Staff of Cassandra, although she and Madelyn retained their friendship.
  • Jenny Dalby — A former wardmate of Horace, George, Alyss, and Will. Jenny runs a restaurant named The Heaped Platter in Wensley Village, which is a popular eating place among villagers and visitors alike.
  • Jerome (The Roamers) - The leader of a band of Roamers who briefly resided in Redmont, stealing Ebony in the process to be used as training for his fighting dog, Demon Tooth. He was killed by the rage-blind Demon Tooth, however, after the dog tore our his throat. Like all the Roamers (his extended family), Jerome regarded women as second-class citizens and was especially cruel to Hilde before she escaped thanks to Alyss and Will.
  • Jerome (The Ruins of Gorlan) (banished) - A former second-year Battleschool cadet of Sir Rodney's, along with two others - Alda and Bryn - Jerome made Horace Altman's first year at Battleschool and living nightmare. After he was identified as a bully by Halt, Jerome was banished from the fief with his two friends.
  • Joel — The innkeeper of the Wensley Inn, Joel is known to have the best coffee in the village, something that is among the few things that can rivals Jenny's restaurant.
  • Johnathan — A sentry employed amongst the garrison of Castle Redmont and a friend of Will Treaty who grew up in service to the fief.
  • Joseph — A bulky villager of Willow Bend and the member of the Town Watch. After Will and Madelyn captured the highwaymen ‘Bearkillers’, Joseph and another Watchman, Barney, were summoned to escort the brigands to the town jail.
  • Kicker - Horace's bay battlehorse who was presumably born and trained in Redmont. Kicker is described as being fond of his master, and is good friends with Tug and Abelard, respectively Will and Halt's Ranger Horses, reflecting Horace's own friendship with their masters. He is presumed either dead or retired from old age, as Stamper has replaced him as Horace's steed.
  • Lady MargaretSir Rodney’s second wife and a rather attractive former widow. As her title suggests, Margaret is a Redmont noblewoman of Baron Arald’s court and seems to be a kindly soul, softly preventing her fiancé from overdoing his cheers for Horace and Cassandra during their wedding.
  • Lady Sandra — The Baroness of Redmont and wife of Arald. Sandra is a loving woman who took an active part in the raising of Redmont's wards and quite a good dancer, teach Halt how to dance for his wedding though has failed to educate her husband in the finer points of dancing.
  • Lucy — A young, tomboyish girl villager of Wensley Village and the daughter of the village seamstress, Mistress Buttersby. Lucy works as a waitress in The Heaped Platter, occasionally being rewarded or simply helping herself to samples of food from the restaurant menu. She is a village friend of Madelyn Altman, who she befriended during her first year as an apprentice.
  • Madelyn Altman — The Crown Princess of Araluen and daughter of Cassandra and Horace, she has been apprenticed to her godfather, Will Treaty, as the first female Ranger, though her royal identity is known only to a select few. Like her mentor, Madelyn has since grown in her own achievements, which include assisting her mentor in obliterating a kidnapping operation on the east coast, being crucial in foiling the rebellion of the Red Fox Clan and freeing the Gallic prince from a troublesome Gallican noble lord with Will, Halt and Horace, returning the prince to his father, the King of Gallica.
  • Malcolm Tillerman - A farmer who's farmstead is located somewhere near Willow Bend Village and who sold his trade during the village market. He was known in the district as a man who drove a hard bargain. When attempting to capture the robber Barton 'Bearkiller' and his band, Will Treaty and Madelyn Altman borrowed Malcolm's cart and mule in order to pose as a farmer taking his products to the market and later had the town magistrate pass on the earned money on to Tillerman.
  • Martin (secretary) — Baron Arald's current secretary who, in a way, organizes the wards' Choosing Day. He is known to talk too loud and reminds Will of a rooster when he tries to clack his heels together in soft shoes and he has a funny way of standing to attention when Baron Arald walks into the room. He is known to have an air of zealousness and importance especially on important occasions.
  • Martin (village boy) — One of the three village youths who Madelyn befriended and attended a secret party organised by Martin and his friends with. Martin was a cheerful boy but did not always think of the consequences of his actions, evident when he procured a cask of poor-quality wine. Martin, with his friends, were found by Will Treaty, who told Martin’s mother and father about it to ensure they learnt their lesson.
  • Master Chubb - Arald's retired kitchenmaster. He is known to use his ladle to hit waiting staff on the head if he thinks they are moving too slowly and is regarded as one of the best chefs in Araluen, along with his former apprentice Jenny and Rollo of Seacliff
  • Mistress Buttersby — The local seamstress of Wensley and mother of Lucy. Buttersby seems to be a close acquaintance of the Ranger Corps, or at least Will Treaty and Halt, as she showed Madelyn how to alter the clothing designed for a male apprentice to fit her slimmer stature, as well as provided her with the clothing – the cloak included – of the Corp. she is apparently a strict mother, as Lucy seemed to genuinely fear a beating from Butterby if she learnt of her and her friends secret outing.
  • Mordini — Mordini was a Genovesan Assassin who the Tualaghi chieftain Iqbal hired in an attempt to murder Princess Cassandra. Mordini and another Genovesan, Serafino, briefly resided in Wensley Village. The royal assassination was thwarted by Will Treaty and Nils Ropehander, who killed one assassin and captured the other, though it is uncertain which would-be-killer was which.
  • Mound – A robber who, with Nuttal and Tomas, stole from Ambrose Shining and intended to hide out in Jenny's house, then flee. Of the three, Mound was perceived as the greatest danger for his intelligence and build but was less ruthless than Tomas. He was incapacitated by Jenny after occupying her house with the other two and presumably arrested after Gilan found him.
  • Nelly (possibly) – A former young maid in Castle Gorlan, unlike some of the staff, Nelly was completely unaware of her liege lord's planned coup d'état against the ailing King Oswald, who she befriended during his time of imprisonment. She also met and befriended Pritchard while he was posing was a starving beggar. It is likely she took up residence in either Redmont or Keramon Fief following Gorlan's disbandment.
  • Nigel – The Scribemaster of Redmont Fief. He, like most other members of the Scribeschool, is extremely quiet and studious, yet lacked the stuttering shyness his apprentice, George Carter once had, having gained confidence when he was a young scribe-in-training.
  • Norman — A young worker at Jenny's restaurant, he is noted to assist Jenny in her cooking.
  • Nuttal – A small man with features reminiscent of a ferret, Nuttal lacked much in the way of bravery, being noted to be a snivelling coward.
  • One-Eyed Jem — A brigand who served as part of Barton 'Bearkiller's group, One-Eyed Jem and the 'Bearkillers' conducted their operations around Willow Bend until Will and Madelyn brought them to justice for their crimes. Though no illustration has been given to Jem's physical appearance apart from the fact he is blond-haired, it can be assumed he either possesses only a single working eye or covers one of his eyes for reasons unknown.
  • Oswald – The young son of a riverboat trader who, along with his father and brother Ryan, ferried goods up the Tarbus River, despite the deaths of several of their friends at the hands of pirates. With Ryan, Oswald manned the oars of the small river craft that they plied their trade on.
  • Paul – A senior cadet of the battleschool in Redmont Fief, he assisted in assessing training apprentices with Sir Morton. Tragically, however, he lost his life in the first half of the Battle of the Uthal-Plains, perishing in the fray of combat against the Army of Rain and Night.
  • Pauline DuLacy — A senior diplomat and Head of the Redmont Diplomatic Corps, as well as a close advisor of King Duncan himself. She is very good friends with the Scribemaster and Baron Arald and is a mentor to Alyss Mainwaring, the two sharing a mother-daughter relationship. As Will's graduation grew near, Lady Pauline and Halt O'Carrick married.
  • Petulengo (briefly) – Part of the younger generation of Jerome’s band of Roamers, he assisted in attempting to turn peaceful Ebony into a savage fighting dog. Like all his people, he treated Hilde badly and was a notable coward, fearing both the threat of Ebony biting him and his own leader (and presumed relative) Jerome.
  • Plod – An old pony that was lent to Svengal as he, Halt, Will, Horace and Gilan rode to Wolfwind. Svengal continuously complains about the horse even though it is the slowest of the group "plodding" along. It is presumed that Plod is a retired Ranger Horse.
  • Rafe — The head waiter in Jenny's restaurant. He is often making the mistake of laying out the knives and forks in the wrong place, much to Jenny's annoyance. It is also revealed that he is illiterate. Will helps him find which place the cutlery goes on.
  • Randell – A gambler who frequented his town’s tavern with some friends. Incautious, Randell lets it slip to Will (who’s Ranger’s identity he had no idea of) that there is a dogfight hosted by the nearby Roamers on but is quickly hushed by his friends as dogfighting is illegal.
  • Richard — One of the senior members of the watch in Wensley Village and a close from of Ambrose Shining.
  • Robard — A former assistant steward under Desmond who was demoted for his treatment of the staff under him and suspected stealing. Bitter, Robard set up a series of "accidents" to take place in retaliation to his demotion, but was tricked into exposing himself by Will and was poisoned by Serafino and Mordini, who he had been supplying information to.
  • Ryan – The son of a trader who ferries his goods up and down the river Tarbus, Ryan helps him, manning the oars on a small river craft along with his brother Oswald.
  • Sable — Will Treaty's dog since the beginning of Madelyn’s training (it is assumed Ebony had died or grown too old to serve). She is a descendant of Shadow (possibly the granddaughter of Will's first dog) and shares her kin’s excitable nature.
  • Salt Peter – An elderly farmer who Halt and Will accounted while tracking a wild boar, who Peter was also tracking after it plagued his village and killed his son-in-law. Halt sends Salt Peter to Castle Redmont to fetch Baron Arald and tell him that the Rangers have found a boar's lair. He is called so on account of his liking of "a little salt with (his) meat".
  • Serafino — A Genovesan Assassin hired by Iqbal Makali bin Ha’rish with his colleague Mordini to assassinate Princess Cassandra during her wedding and who briefly resided in Wensley Village. The royal assassination was thwarted by Will Treaty and Nils Ropehander, who killed one assassin and captured the other, though it is uncertain which would-be-killer was which.
  • Sir Digby — A high-ranking knight and the recalcitrant ruler of Barga Hold, Digby, while attempting to short-change Castle Redmont of the draft of troops he was obliged to supply for the second war with Morgarath and his armies. He was subsequently an unfortunate victim of Halt’s tendency to throw those who displeased him into their own moat.
  • Sir Karel — A senior knight in Redmont Fief and a drill instructor in the Battleschool, Karel, with Rodney and Morton, was the first to recognise Horace’s natural talent with the sword and suggested the former ward be apprenticed to Sir Wallace.
  • Sir MontagueCobram Keep's pompous lord, in the light of the coming war with the Army of Rain and Night, Montague, though willing to supply the men, was unwilling to place himself or them under the command of Baron Arald, his tenant, on the misshapen grounds of a long-ago treaty. However, he signed later on after a visit from Alyss and Halt, where he was thrown into the moat.
  • Sir Rodney — The Head of the Redmont Battleschool who's symbol, a scarlet wolfshead, he gained when fighting the Skandians during their raids. He mentored Horace Altman during his Battleschool years and was the trainer who recognised his natural talent.
  • Tug II – Tug’s successor. After the original Tug (now Bellerophon) was forced to retire due to his injuries, Tug II was given to replace him and now serves as Will’s mount, baring a near-identical resemblance to his predecessor, a relative of his.
  • Ulf – Baron Arald’s horsemaster, he was responsible for operating the castle's Horseschool, where he oversaw the management and training of the castle's battlehorses, to be used by Redmont knights in times of conflict. Ulf had brown eyes and muscular arms. He wore woollen clothing with a leather vest and riding boots. Ulf was the only present Craftsmaster at Will’s Choosing Ceremony not to take an apprentice, rejecting Will’s request for horseschool, assuming his small stature would prevent him from handling his powerful horses.
  • Walter — The Wensley village constable and a capable officer. Walter goes after the thieves who robbed the silversmith Ambrose Shining. However, he was following a false trail as the thieves were actually hiding out a Jenny Dalby's cottage.
  • Walter Scar — A highwayman under the command of Barton 'Bearkiller', Walter and the band plagued the area around Willow Bend Village until they were brought to justice by Will Treaty and Madelyn Altman. Walter's weapon of chose was the heavily-spiked cudgel.
  • Will Treaty — Formerly a resident of Aspienne Fief who, after his parents were killed, was taken to Castle Redmont by Halt in secret as a ward and later became the Ranger's apprentice. During his apprenticeship and later life as a Ranger, Will achieved legendary status, assisting in killing the last of the Kalkara assassins, playing a pivotal role in the defeat of Morgarath by destroying the bridge across the Celtic Fissure with Princess Cassandra, helping defend Skandia from a Temujai invasion, leading to the formation of the Treaty of Hallasholm, rescuing Oberjarl Erak Starfollower from the Tualaghi, thwarting a Picta invasion of Norgate Fief, breaking and destroying a second Outsider outbreak, supporting Emperor Shigeru in the Nihon-Ja Civil War, bringing down Jory Ruhl's slaving ring with the assistance of his apprentice Madelyn Altman and rescuing Crown Prince Giles from the clutches of a cruel baron with Madelyn, Halt and Horace Altman.
