Shadow went through a several names, including Blackie, Traitor, and Bread and Butter Pudding, but it was Trobar who thought of the name Shadow because of her shadow-like movement. In the end, Will let Trobar keep Shadow, on the condition that if Shadow ever had puppies, Will would get the pick of the litter.
Shadow makes another appearance in Halt's Peril. When Will returns to Malcolm's cottage in Healer's Clearing to get help for Halt, Shadow is the one that leads him to the house. Will whistles for her many times and she appears, leading him to Healer's Clearing as Will couldn't find it in the tangled wood.
Later in the book when Will is saying goodbye to Malcolm, Trobar gives Will a surprise. Shadow is now a mother with a litter of puppies. She acts motherly toward them and Will ends up with one of her puppies as his own, the pick of the litter, because the puppy has one eye brown, and the other a manic blue; just like her mother. Trobar named Shadow's daughter Ebony and Will brought her home to Redmont as his new pet/companion.
She is all black with a white ruff at her throat and chest and a white tip to her bushy tail. Her legs are white and she has a black head with a white blaze running from her muzzle to between her eyes. Her left eye is brown and her right eye is "a manic blue". She is friendly and welcoming to people she feels are kind, but has a good sense for danger.
Will trains her to respond to many commands which prove useful. He also uses her in his jongleur act.
Under Trobar's care, she had four puppies, one of which was Ebony, who was given to Will
Will saved Shadow from John Buttle and was her owner for some time, therefore creating a close relationship with her.
Shadow loves Trobar, her current owner and the one who gave her her name.
Her puppies probably stayed little time with her, but, like all mothers, she loves her children.
