The Stone Flutes are large monoliths in the middle of the solitary plains. They are encountered by Halt, Will, and Gilan in The Ruins of Gorlan. They are probably based on the English stone circle of Stonehenge or the Callanish Stones located near the village of Callanish (Western Isles of Scotland).
They are large rocks placed in a rough circle and as the wind blows through them they emit a whistling noise which gives them their name. No-one knows why there were built there, but the sound they make tends to set a person's nerves on edge. This eerie drone was possibly inspired by the Singing, Ringing Tree, a sculpture by Tonkin Liu Architects. It can be found at Crown Point, England.
